ORIGINAL

An excellent map of the Pacific and the Americas with California shown as a large island. North America is separated by the “Straet Anian” from the large land mass “Terra Esonis”. Early discoveries in the Pacific are present showing parts of western New Zealand and Tasmania. The complete area of New Guinea is still unknown, islands both real and legendary are present. The map is decorated with three compass roses. In addition are thirteen locations from where rhumb lines converge. Gerhard van Keulen (1678-1726) worked as his father Johannes van Keulen (1654-1715) did as a publisher and author of nautical charts in Amsterdam. In 1693 his father Johannes Keulen brought the business and premises of chart maker Hendrik Doncker. From 1743 the publishing house even had a monopoly on the supply of the East India Company (VOC) with charts. Some of the principle works of Gerhard van Keulen include extensions of his father’s work the "Zee-Fakkel 'and' Zee-Atlas." These two Atlases are considered to be among some of the finest Dutch charts. This map is in two joined sheets as it was published. ORIGINALKARTE
