Van Langren's remarkable map of India, Persia and the Middle East comes from Linschoten "Navigatio ac ltinerarium” published in 1596. The highly decorative map is an accurate chart, of the coastline based on the Portuguese voyages of discovery and previous maps. The bottom center has a wonderful compass rose adorned by a “Fleur-de-lis” with fruit and flowers. On the right hand side is a large sea monster. Interestingly the only land animals shown are in the Middle East. Explanatory text and a mileage scales are on the top right. It has both rhumb lines in the oceans for naval navigation and a detailed landscape, meaning it could be used as a chart and a map.
