English | A wonderfully detailed map of Southern India. The simple title cartouche on the right hand side states that Francois Valentyn is the manufacturer below this is the compass rose. Asian maps were in demand for trade and private usage. This lead to the rapid rise in cartography and production of the period. Maps of this period are in contrast to the previous dominant Ptolemaic view of India which showed Asia as too small. This was no longer the case in the maps of Dutchman Francois Valentyn (1666-1727). Valentyn was a member of the "Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie", (VOC) or The Dutch East India Company, on whose behalf he traveled repeatedly to India. His impressions, experiences and adventures he recorded provided information on the Indra-Asian trade network of the early 18th Century. |
