ORIGINAL

Copper Plate, Uncolored An early southerly orientated chart of the entrance to the river Elbe and the surrounding coastline. Depth measurements, islands and navigational lines are shown. Two compass roses are present p and three alphabetical keys at the top of the map provide reference to the names of parts of the river and coast. A solitary contemporary ship sails the center of the sea. Comparative measurements in nautical miles are present on the bottom right hand side with the Dutch, Spanish and English standards of the period. The name of the publisher on the map is Jacob Theunifz (1643-1717) who published under the name of ‘Lootsman’. Jacobsz & Lootsman and Jacob & Casparus were publishers and chart makers based in Amsterdam. The name ‘Lootsman’ was used to distinguish themselves from their rivals.
