Ortelius, Abraham

copperplate engraving

ORIGINAL

This is unique double map of both the Nile delta region and the city of Tunis and surrounding area. The top map contains colored political boundaries and a grid reference system typical of Ortelius’s maps. The many settlements along the Nile are clearly named. The bottom map is more of an artistic representation. No grid or rhumb lines are present for orientation. The sea is filled with classical vessels. Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a one of the pioneering cartographers of the Renaissance period. He was based in Antwerp and was a known friend and rival of Gerard Mercator. He is best known for his new revised and reprinted edition of the Atlas from classical cartographer Claudius Ptolemy's entitled "Geographia".
