This is unique perspective of the island of Mozambique that was published between 1596 and 1644. Clearly shown are the fortifications inland and several ships flying the Portuguese standard. A Portuguese coat of arms is on the top left and a detailed compass rose at the bottom. Text is in both Latin and Dutch. In the 16th century Mozambique was important to the Portuguese trade interests in the region. It was used as a base on the way to India. It was engraved by Jan Deutecum for Linschoten's 'Itinerario'. Jan van Huygen Linschoten (1563-1611) was a historian, traveler and at one point secretary to the Portuguese archbishop in Goa. He published his travels in 'Itinerario, voyagie, ofte Ship-vaert' in 1596. later editions of this publication were made in Latin and French.
