Crete, Corsica, Sardina and the Ionian Islands. Uniquely under the Sardinian map is a list on unknown local words. Under the Crete map is a list of cities. On the left hand side is a list of uncertain place names. The scale for each map is provided is in a grid reference around the edges and is unique to each map. Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a Dutch cartographer who published the first modern atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' in 1570. Editions on this Atlas were made up until 1612. These maps first appeared in 'Additamentum III' in 1584 with Italian text on the rearside. In addition, he published an atlas of ancient cartography the 'Parergon' and a road atlas, the 'Epitome.
