ORIGINAL

This is a map of the Chinese province of Shantung. From Joan Blaeu's 'Atlas Sinensis', the first Western Atlas, which dealt exclusively with China and was based on the material gathered by the Jesuit Martino Martini. Rev Martinus traveled extensively in Aisa, his observations formed the basis of many European maps. Joan Blaeu (1599-1673) worked with his father Willem Janszoon and brother Cornelis in Amsterdam. In 1638 he was appointed cartographer of the East India Company. Reference Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmaker, Early World Press, 2004, p145
