This map is a remarkable pre-revolutionary war map. It is based on Lewis Evans map of 1749 one of the first and most important maps of the region. This maps shows the states of New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Hampshire in color. The neighboring states are outlined. The top left has a very detailed title cartouche with a European in contemporary clothing centered with workers. Native wildlife fills the bordering area. The continental states are separated from the interior by a large mountain range. Comments in German are listed in between the ranges and towards the edge of the map. Historically, eastern Pennsylvania had the largest concentration of German speaker in the United States. The bottom right has a key of buildings and notable locations and a mile scale. This map was engraved for Matthäus Setter (1678-1757) by Lotter. Setter was an apprentice to Johann Homman, and would go on to set up a family cartography business in Augsburg. Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmaker, Early World Press, 2004, p150
