English | This is a map of the south-central province of Jiangxi that appeared in Blaeu-Martini “Atlas Sinensis". It is the first map of the western province that had been made to detail the exact requirements of Rev Martion Martini. On the bottom left is a very decorative cartouche with four figures. Rev Martinus travelled extensively in Asia, his observations formed the basis of many European maps. Willem Janszoon Blaeu as the founder of the Netherlands leading cartographic firm and a leading figure in Dutch cartography. Joan Blaeu (1599-1673) worked with his father Willem and brother Cornelis in Amsterdam. In 1638 he was appointed cartographer of the East India Company. Blaeu schrieb in sein Tagebuch: "Pfarrer Martinus Martinus kommt aus Indien und bringt Beschreibungen und Zeichnungen aus dem chinesischen Reich mit. Er besteht darauf, dass ich eine Karte anfertige und sie veröffentliche. Dafür lasse ich alle anderen Arbeiten liegen, um mich ausschließlich dieser Arbeit widmen zu können." |
