ORIGINAL

The Danube in Vienna and in the Austrian Archduchy, a province in the Holy Roman Empire. At the top right corner is a title cartouche with reference to Lazius Wolfgang (1514-1565) a Hungarian physicist, cartographer and geographer. During his studies, he traveled widely through Europe and made maps. His maps are of Austria, Hungary and Bavaria. At the bottom in the center is a coats of arms, with key and scale. The bottom left has the publishers cartouche in a armillary sphere. In the center of the map is the Archduchy Austria (Upper Austria or Archduchy Austria above the river Enns). This was the only Archduchy in Austrian history. Each country, with the exception of Salzburg, shows the country's coat of arms. The larger towns are shown. Hondius Henricus (1597-1651) was a younger son of Jodocus Hondius engraver and publisher. He worked both alone and with his brother in law Johannes Janssonius based in Amsterdam. ORIGINALKARTE
