ORIGINAL

A early version of this excellent map of the Caribbean which shows the region from Chesapeake to the Gulf of Mexico, Central America and northern South America, to the equator. Two decorative cartouches with cherubs and sea creatures decorate the opposite corners of the map. On the bottom left is a beautiful mileage scale with a maritime character. The top right has detailed title cartouche. Eight ships travel the seas and three native canoes are pictured on the coast of North America. Several interesting cartographic myths are present on the map including two large non-existient lakes in the western region of Georgia. The archetypal cartographic myth of "El Dorado" the city of gold, is at the Lacus Parime in Guyana. This map is a beautiful resource for political history. Many of the colored areas shown as smaller political entities have become part of the larger states. This particular map is derived from Hessel Gerritsz's sea chart of 1631. This map appeared in 'Atlas Minor' which consisted of around 100 maps. Nicolaes Visscher II (1649-1702) continued the work of his father until 1702, then his wife continued the business until 1726. Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmaker, Early World Press, 2004, p332 Phillip D Burden, The Mapping of North America II, Raeleigh Publications, 2007, p177

ORIGINALKARTE
