ORIGINAL

A excellent map westerly orientated map of Ireland. Shown are the medieval divisions split into four provinces. Ulster, Connacht, Munster and Leinster. The location of the lough's (lakes) is fairly accurate. The sea shows numerous maritime elements including some sailing ships, sea monsters and a fisherman. The top has three cartouches, the left shows Irish miles and center has the title cartouche and the author Boazio Baptiste. The top right has a title cartouche with reference St. Patrick who, according to one story, was sent by Pope Celestine in winter 432/33, as bishop of Gaul to Ireland to convert the inhabitants to Christianity. As his legacy is the foundation of numerous monasteries, churches and schools. To the left of the title is a large coat of arms cartouches. This shows the British coat of arms with the English St George Cross and the Irish harp on a blue background. The motto of The Order of the Garter the frame arms (which means ‘shame upon him who thinks evil upon it’) is shown and the coat has a royal crown. At the bottom in the is the name of the engraver Johann Baptist Devrient (1552-1612). Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was one of the most important figures in cartographer in this period. He is best known for his 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' generally considered the first Atlas. References Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmaker, Early World Press, 2004, p358-359

ORIGINALKARTE
