English | Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a self taught cartographer and engraver from Oberkammlach, Schwabia, Germany. So influential was he to become that he was appointed cartographer of The Holy Roman Empire from 1715 and a member of the Prussian Royal Academy of Sciences. His work would be continued after his death by a company called The Homman Heirs. This portrait was painted by Johann Homann Kenckel, an employee of the Christoph Weigel's publishing house 1715-1722 Reference Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmaker, Early World Press, 2004, p 361-362 |
Deutsch | Das einzige bekannte authentische Portrait Homanns wurde von Johann Kenckel, einem Mitarbeiter des benachbarten Christoph Weigelschen Verlages, zwischen 1715 und 1722 gezeichnet, aber erst viel später von Johann Wilhelm Winter gestochen. Der Druck wird erstmals im Verlagsverzeichnis von 1741 erwähnt und taucht auch in den älteren Atlanten des Verlages nicht auf.
