The Dnepr river in this attractive and unique double map. The river begins at Nalubow at the top left and continues south to the mouth of the Black Sea on the bottom right hand side of the right map. It was originally issued as part of a 6-sheet wall map of Lithuania. The detailed text on either side of the map outlines the settlements, fortresses and areas of interest in the river. This map is based on the Radziwill-Makowski map of the Duchy of Lithuania (1613). A key is on the right map showing the prominent religions that can be found in the settlements. Twin compass roses adorn this northerly orientated map. Descriptive text is in Latin, and above the largest text at the bottom, is the mileage scale for both maps. The reverse side has German text. Willam Blaeu (1571-1638) was one of the most renown dutch map makers in history. Based in Amsterdam, his business also produced globes, cartographic instruments and sea charts. He was later appointed cartographer to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His work was continued by his sons Joan and Cornelis Blaeu.
