Title and scale cartouche are together on the bottom right, complimented with cherubs toying with navigational equipment. Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594) was a major figure in the history of cartographer. In addition to his maps, he developed the Mercator projection, to help navigators overcome the problem of navigating on a spherical surface.
