For this map showing the Black Sea Abraham Ortelius used the backround of modern cartography, based on Gerhard Mercator's maps of South Eastern Europe as well as more traditional sources. The cartouche is decorated with strapwork, title and privilege. The map dates from the rare English edition of 1606. The English text on verso describes the sea.
