English | This is a intresting double map of the Caribbean islands and the coast of North America. The bottom maps shows the two largest Spanish colonies in the area Hispaniola and Cuba. The coast of Florida is shown in the north and in the far west is The Yucatan Peninsula protruding through the border. The top map shows other Spanish settlements along the coast of modern day Mexico and North America. While no compass roses are present both of the maps are of a northern orientation. The scale of the two maps is different as indicated by the scale on the side of each map. Abraham Ortelius was a cartographer and publisher in Antwerb. His most famous work was the massive 'Theatrum Orbuis Terrarum'. He was appointed Royal Geographer to King Philip II of Spain, and was a friend and rival of Gerard Mercator. Ortelius drew this map personally based on the work of Mecator and other sources. This is his only map of this region.
