English | Two attractive maps of the Philippine islands in full color. The "Dépôt des Cartes, Plans et Journaux du Ministère de la Marine" was established in 1720 in Paris. The purpose of the state agency was to supply the French Navy with the best and most accurate maps possible. The first hydrographic director was Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 - 1772), who was also responsible for this map. Bellin was highly regarded in the French civil service and would become the Royal Hydrographer. His major works include the publication of the See atlas "Le Neptune Francois" in 1744.
