English | The most famous of early town atlases, published in 6 volumes and bound as ‘3. Vol. I to IV’ in French and ‘V-VI’ in Latin. The atlas contains 6 engraved title pages and 363 engraved plates, and depicts a combination of detailed perspectives, town plans and other views. It was one of the best-selling works to emerge in the last quarter of the 16th century. Although the atlas had no precedent, it immediately answered a great public demand, because social, political, and economic life at that time was concentrated in the cities. All parts except the sixth have a preface by Georg Braun, the canon of Cologne Cathedral. Braun also wrote the text accompanying the plans and views on verso. The information is largely new and original, suggesting extensive correspondence between Braun and any array of people in other countries. Particular mention should be made to Abraham Ortelius who supplied much material for the ‘Civitates.’ Frans Hogenberg was a son of a Munich engraver and a friend of Mercator and Ortelius. He engraved the majority of the plates for the latter’s ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.’ The majority of available editions of ‘Civitates’ contain Latin text. TheGerman editions – and indeed the French editions (like this one) - are much scarcer. REFERENCE Van der Kroegt 2007, pp 5-16. |
