A magnificent westerly orientated sea chart of Europe famous for its decorative elements. Interesting the map has three mileage scales, top right, mid right and bottom left. A single compass with fleur de lys rose adorns the sea off the coast to Iceland.The inset map on the coast of Africa covers Greece, Crete and the surrounding area. Within Turkey is the key for the region, and next to the key is a simple triple crescent coat of arms. Being a chart, little attention is given to populating the interior of the continent. The dominant feature being the varied coat of arms of each nation. The three large coats of arms, from the south of are the Spanish, French and German. To the right of the German is the Swedish coat of arms, and a smaller Russian one is also present. The British coat of arms - probably for reasons of space is particularly small, but very rich in detail. Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) was one of the most prolific Dutch cartographers of the second half of the 17th Century. He worked as an engraver in Amsterdam since 1648 and a publisher since 1659. Prachtvolle Seekarte von Europa in einem ungewöhnlichen Format. Sie ist berühmt für die dekorativen Elemente, namentlich die großen Wappenkartuschen für jedes der größeren in der Karte enthaltenen Länder. Oben rechts ein Meilenzeiger mit Putti. Unten rechts ein weiterer Meilenzeiger mit einem Putto. Am unteren Rand der Karte die prächtige Titelkartusche mit Allegorien. Mehrere Putti beschäftigen sich mit Navigationsinstrumenten. Der Rand wird weiterhin von Galleonsfiguren gerahmt. Unten links ein dritter Meilenzeiger. Am linken Rand eine Insetkarte des Küstengebietes des östlichen Mittelmeeres mit einer Insellegende. Die Küstenlinien Europas werden gesäumt von zahlreichen Ortsnamen von Küstenstädten. Nordöstlich von Island eine prachtvolle Windrose mit fleur de lys nach Norden und dem Kreuz nach Osten gerichtet. Auf spanischem Gebiet, hier ohne Unterteilung der spanischen und portugisieschen Gebiete, das große prächtige Wappen des spanischen Königreiches mit samt den Namen der Einzelwappen. Ein Wappenlöwe hält die Einzelwappen in Form. In Frankreich das Wappen mit den drei fleur de lys und Randfiguren. Am auffälligsten das deutsche Wappen. Es besticht vor allem durch seine Größe, Position und durch Details. Der Reichsadler mit einem Schwertkreuz wird gerahmt von kleineren Wappen und gekrönt durch einen Siegesspruch. Auf der skandinavischen Halbinsel zwei weitere Wappen für Schweden und Norwegen. Das russische Wappen ist eher unauffällig gehalten und einfach gerahmt. Das britische Wappen ist - wohl aus Platzgründen - besonders klein, aber sehr reich im Detail. Nordafrika zeigt nur ein einziges Wappen mit Halbmonden.
