A westerly orientated chart with extensive depth measurements and marked shoals along the English and Northern European coasts. The Scandinavia coast is well mapped, but without depth measurements. The majority of the detail is on the coastline with the interior of the continents without detail. Coats of arms are shown for England, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands. Latitude and longitude lines are shown in the standard Mercator projection. In addition to the compass rose on the bottom left, rhumb lines cross the map and converge at fifteen different locations on the map in a circle. At the bottom left of the map is a simple mileage scale cartouche with scales in Dutch, English and Spanish. The bottom right is a magnificent title cartouche with scrolls, ornaments, cartographic tools, cherubs and the manufacturer's details. The Dutch bookseller and chart maker Hendrik Doncker (1625/26-1699) is one of the most prolific publishers of nautical charts, atlases and navigation books in the late 17th Century. His major works include the 1659 Atlas, entitled "De Zee Atlas ofte Water-Waerld" which was followed by several editions. Unfortunately, none of the first editions have survived. In 1676 Doncker began to publish his large-format atlas "De Nieuwe Groote vermeerderde Zeeatlas". In addition, he cooperated with the publication of "Zeespiegels" by Pieter Goos. After his death, his son Hendrick Doncker II (1664-1739) continued the family business. Die westorientierte Seekarte umfasst die Nordsee von den Shetland Inseln über Jütland bis zur norwegischen Westküste. Wie für Seekarten üblich sind in dieser Karte nur die Küstengebiete und die Inseln detailliert beschrieben. Untiefen sind gekennzeichnet. Das gezeichnete Binnenland bleibt unerschlossen. Das angrenzende Festland ist mit den Wappen Englands, Norwegens und der Nieder- lande dekoriert. Grenzmarkierungen zwischen den Ländern fehlen. Die Längen- und Breitengrade sind in der bis heute in der Seefahrt üblichen Mercator-Projektion als gerade Linien eingezeichnet. Sie bilden das Gitternetz für einen Kreis aus 16 gleichmäßig verteilten Wind- und Kompassrosen, von denen die sogenannten Rumbenlinien ausgehen. Diese Darstellungsweise ermöglicht eine gesteuerte Durchquerung der Meere mithilfe eines Kompasses. Links unten auf der Karte befindet sich ein schlichter Meilenzeiger mit drei Maßstäben umgeben von einer Kartusche im Ohrmuschelstil. Gegenüber ist eine prachtvolle Titelkartusche mit Rollwerk, fischmaulartigem Ornament und Putten angebracht. Das barocke Dekor wird kombiniert mit Büchern, kartografischem Werkzeug und einer Armillarsphäre als Zeichen der Wissenschaft. In einem zweiten Textfeld sind die Herstellerdaten angegeben. Das Entstehungsjahr ist auf der Karte vermerkt.
